ROD BALTIMORE - Instrument Builder and Master Repair Technician
Rod Baltimore has been a music retailer, instrument maker and a master woodwind and brass repair technician in New York for over 55 years. Much of that time was spent on the famed 48th street music central.  Rod had been a music retailer in New York for over 40 years. Much of that time was spent on the famed 48th street music central. Working with brass and woodwinds, Rod maintained one of the most sought after repair shop in the America.

Today he plies his craft from his new master's workshop in Long Beach New York on Long Island.

Any given day from his workshop, Rod can be found hammering gently at a client’s flute, clarinet, sax, oboe, English horn, bassoon, trombones, big brass, tenors, altos, French horns, and anything in woodwind and brass., while hundreds of wounded instruments hang from hooks on the wall eagerly awaiting repair.
Rod is a master at woodwinds and brass instrument repair. Baltimore was already a fixture on 48th St. at the tender age of 12, when he started shining shoes outside a bar to pay for music lessons. When the weather turned cold, the sympathetic bar owner suggested he learn a trade, and sent him off to the Penzel Mueller instrument-making factory in Long Island City. That led to a fifteen-year apprenticeship that took him to factories in France and Germany, as well as New York. When he completed his training, there was no question about where he would work — with the pros on 48th Street.

Rod and his apprentices do repairs big and small — from pad replacements to a complete overhaul for beloved instruments that have literally been run over by cars or subway trains.
Rod's shop is not only crammed with instruments and the tools of his trade on every available surface, it has the fascinating aura of the history of 20th century jazz. While his flattened thumbs tinker with a French horn's piston valves, this old-school craftsman nonchalantly relates stories about Stan Getz throwing his tenor sax across the room in a drunken rage and flying him out to Calumet City, Ill., to fix it.

John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Johnny Campo, who plays in the shows, all the guys doing Broadway and off-Broadway. You name it, if they play a woodwind or brass instrument, and are renowned musicians, they have called upon Rod to repair or overhaul their instrument.

Rod’s goal is to continue to provide state of the art services for professional or be overhauls, restorations, intonation work, custom necks, custom key work and professional products.

Rod’s philosophy and techniques for restoration have been called "visionary" and "pioneering" for good reason.  For the past 55 years his work has been guided by the principles of Adolphe Sax.
Rod continues to serve musicians with his mandate of preserving and improving the unique tone quality, acoustic response, mechanical integrity and cosmetics of the instruments we offer or repair.  Rod continues his tradition of doing repairs big and small — from pad replacements to a complete overhaul for beloved instruments that have literally been run over by cars or subway trains.

Rod often tell his clients and co-workers, you can just tell by feel. If something's wrong with a horn we don't even have to play it. “All we have to do is put this light in there and it will tell you everything that's wrong with the horn. Then we play them when it's done.”

HAVE AN INSTRUMENT THAT NEEDS REPAIR?

Make an appointment and we'll give it a look.

My workshop is fully equipped with the latest specialist high tech as well as traditional tools and also a massive stock of pads, spares and accessories to cover most repairs to saxophones, clarinets, flutes, oboes and bassoons. I have been repairing woodwinds now for over 55+ years and all instruments are fully play tested by me on completion.

All major repair jobs including overhauls and customizations are guaranteed for one year because we stand by the quality of our work and want to be certain that our customers are always satisfied. We use only top-quality pads (leather, double fish-skin, plastic resonators, metal resonators with/without rivet) for pad replacements and woodwind instrument overhauls. More generally, if you are unhappy with any repair (minor or major) done in our shop, don't hesitate to bring it back to us so that we can re-examine the instrument and find a solution for you at no extra charge.
